'Cold lava flood' kills villagers near Indonesia volcano

Fast-moving mudflows streaming from the mouth of a volcano killed four villagers in eastern Indonesia, officials said Wednesday.?

About 1,000 other people?have fled their homes.

Mount Gamalama, located in the Molucca Islands, sprang back to life this month with a powerful, non-fatal eruption.

Government spokesman Yusuf Sunnya said Wednesday that days of heavy rains triggered flows of cold lava, rocks and other debris that slammed into villages Tuesday night.

He said four people were killed and more than a dozen others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from broken bones to head wounds.

The Jakarta Post described the?deadly incident as?a "cold lava flood."

Provincial spokesman Andi Arief said the cold lava slides destroyed several houses in the villages.

"Initial data cited that three people died, while many other residents (were) evacuated to a school building and the former North Maluku governor's office," Andi said in a statement.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago with millions of people living on mountains or near fertile flood plains. Seasonal downpours here often cause landslides.

Sony agrees to end LCD venture with Samsung: source

TOKYO/SEOUL: Sony Corp has agreed to end its LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics and will sell its stake to the South Korean company, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The decision comes after Sony in November warned of a fourth straight year of losses, with its television unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and a surging yen.

The Japanese TV maker at that time said it would revamp LCD panel procurement, but declined to comment on reports that it would end the panel joint venture with Samsung.

A Samsung spokesman said on Monday the two companies would make an announcement regarding the joint venture at O630 GMT, without elaborating.

Sony holds a nearly 50 percent stake in liquid-crystal display (LCD) joint venture S-LCD, which was established in April 2004 to secure stable supplies of the component.

Shares in Sony were up 1.75 percent and Samsung Electronics shares traded flat as of 0535 GMT.

Global TV manufacturers are restructuring their businesses and outsourcing production as cutthroat competition and weak demand squeeze margins.

Samsung is the world's No. 1 TV maker, while Sony vies for the No.2 title with South Korea's LG Electronics Inc.

Egypt deports 93 Ethiopians before reaching Israel

CAIRO -- An Egyptian airport official says the government has deported 93 Ethiopians who entered Egypt with hopes of crossing the Sinai desert into Israel illegally.

The airport official says 42 Ethiopians were repatriated on Sunday and another 51 were sent back home a day earlier.

The official says the migrants crossed into Egypt from its southern border with Sudan two weeks ago. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Most of the migrants make the long and dangerous journey through Egypt to Israel in search of jobs.

The Israeli government estimates that, since 2006, some 50,000 Africans have illegally entered southern Israel through its 150 mile (250-kilometer) long border with Egypt's Sinai desert.

MCX crude oil to remain higher on inventory concerns

Crude oil futures briefly pushed above the $100/barrel mark to settled with a gain of +1.03% at 5268 on MCX due to sharply lower inventories and strong US leading indicators.

Slight weakness in the US dollar helped push crude prices higher. Dollar weakness normally helps commodity prices, as it increases their appeal as an alternative asset and makes dollar priced commodities less expensive for holders of other currencies. Jobless claims in the US dropped by 4k last week and leading indicators beat forecasts.

Meanwhile, US oil supplies hit decade lows fueling the bullish advance. Meanwhile, prices continued to draw support from a potential disruption to Middle Eastern oil supplies.

A series of at least 14 coordinated bombings hit Baghdad earlier in the day, killing at least 57 people. The bombings come just days after the last US troops left the country, renewing fears over sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia Muslim groups. Iraq pumped nearly 2.57mbls of oil per day last month.

Lingering concerns that the West would impose tougher sanctions on Iran over the country?s nuclear program also lent support.

Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer, pumping nearly 5% of the world's oil in 2010. Report: US mistakes led to Pakistan airstrikes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Wall Street Journal says Pentagon investigators have determined that mistakes by a joint U.S.-Afghan special operations team led to the airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last month.

The newspaper says the Defense Department investigation found that coalition troops conducting operations along the Afghan border with Pakistan incorrectly believed there were no Pakistani forces in the area.

After the U.S. and Afghan commandos were attacked by militants, they called in airstrikes against two encampments they thought were used by militants. They were actually were Pakistan border posts.

The Journal, citing anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the report, says an opportunity to stop the fighting was missed when a U.S. serviceman gave incorrect data to the Pakistanis, so they did not know their posts were under attack.

In "Tomboy," 10-year old Laure(Zoe Heran) moves to a new neighborhood with her parents(Sophie Cattani & Mathieu Demy) and younger sister Jeanne(Malonn Levana). While looking out from an apartment window one pleasant afternoon, Laure sees a group of boys playing out in the park. When she finally leaves her sister and sleeping, very, very pregnant mother behind in the apartment, the boys are gone, with only Lisa(Jeanne Disson), a girl of her age, left behind in their wake. Laure introduces herself as Mikael and they run after them together, so they can join in the fun. With that simple, elegant setup, writer-director Celine Sciamma tells an evocative and naturalistic genderblender with a very belieable sibling relationship. Sadly, the movie eventually runs straight into a narrative wall. Until then, Laure is not just being a tomboy; she is passing as a boy but not 24/7, so we'll keep to the feminine pronouns.(Actually, it is not until later that she is revealed not to be a boy.) She does this to enjoy the freedoms that boys enjoy but is too young to realize the minefield of gender that she has just walked into. That's where parents come in, as the movie smartly shows how parents help to shape their children's gender.

Girls More Prone Than Boys to Headaches After Head Injury (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Dec. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Children who suffer head trauma can experience headaches months after the injury, with girls more apt to have them than boys, a new study finds.

The researchers also found that the risk of having these headaches was greater after a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) than after a moderate or severe one.

The study, published online Dec. 5 in the journal Pediatrics, included children aged 5 to 17 who were hospitalized with traumatic brain injury at nine facilities in King County in Washington state and one in Philadelphia.

Three months after treatment, headaches were reported by 43 percent of children who had a mild TBI, 37 percent of those who had a moderate to severe TBI, and 26 percent of children in a control group who'd suffered broken arms but no head trauma.

The researchers also assessed the children one year after they were hospitalized and didn't find any significant differences in headaches between the groups.

Teens and girls appear to have the highest risk for headache after mild TBI, and the course of recovery after such events is likely affected by age, injury severity and gender, the researchers concluded.

The authors noted that more than half a million children in the United States suffer a TBI each year.

"Little research has focused on chronic headache post-TBI in children," Dr. Heidi Blume, of the Seattle Children's Research Institute, said in an institute news release. "The prevalence of headache following mild TBI appear to follow a pattern we see in primary headache disorders such as a migraine."

She said the research will examine similarities between TBI and migraine, including a look at whether "migraine therapies will work for post-traumatic headaches."

In the meantime, "what parents need to know is that some children with TBI may have headaches for several weeks or months after TBI, but that most recover with time," Blume said. "And significantly, girls and teenagers appear to be at particular risk for headaches after mild TBI. Parents should be aware of what to expect after mild TBI, and that includes TBI for sports-related injuries."
